A unit of length used in navigation and aviation. Nautical mile. Also written as ', the symbol ' is sometimes used. One nautical mile is 1852 m. Originally, one nautical mile was introduced as the length on the Earth's surface for one minute of latitude on the prime meridian, but its length varies depending on the latitude. Many countries have used the value of 1852 m as the length of one minute at 45 degrees latitude. In the United States and the United Kingdom, a value slightly larger than this was used as one nautical mile, but the aforementioned value was adopted as the international nautical mile.
