Bunpo negotiations - Bunpo no wadan

A negotiation was held at the end of the Kamakura period regarding the succession to the throne between the Jimyoin line of Emperor Gofukakusa and the Daikakuji line of Emperor Kameyama. The dispute between the two lines had been ongoing since the mid-Kamakura period, but with the mediation of the shogunate, which had indicated a policy of alternating succession between the two lines from early on, negotiations were held in April 1317 (Bunpo 1) between the retired Emperor Fushimi of the Jimyoin line and the Cloistered Emperor Go-Uda of the Daikakuji line, who represented both lines. In this peace talk,
(1) Crown Prince Takaharu (Daikakuji line) will ascend the throne next.
(2) The reign will be for 10 years, with two successive lines alternating.
(3) The next crown prince was Prince Kuniyoshi (Daikakuji line), followed by Prince Tokihito (Jimyoin line).
The three points above were essentially proposed by the shogunate. However, point (3) was favorable to the Daikakuji line, which caused the Jimyoin line to dissatisfy and no agreement was reached, and no clear agreement was reached. With the shogunate's intervention, the following year Emperor Hanazono of the Jimyoin line abdicated, and Takaharu ascended to the throne as Godaigo. However, the conflict between the two lines did not subside, and Emperor Go-Daigo, dissatisfied with the shogunate's interference, decided to overthrow the shogunate later.
