Under Japanese rule, this shrine was built on Mount Namsan in Keijo (Seoul) as the guardian deity for all of Korea. The deities enshrined are Amaterasu Omikami and Emperor Meiji. It is the only Imperially sponsored shrine out of the 60 or so shrines built throughout Korea. Numerous shrines were built in colonies and occupied territories under State Shinto, and this is one of the main ones. The decision to build it was made in 1919, the precincts decided the following year, and it was completed in 1925 at a cost of 1.5 million yen. An imperial envoy was welcomed on October 15th to hold the enshrinement ceremony, and the first annual festival was held on the 17th. From then on, it became an imperially sponsored shrine, with imperial envoys attending the annual festivals and the chief priest receiving the treatment of an imperially appointed official.
