...They were so named because they would whip themselves and dance wildly, resulting in ecstasy. In the 18th century, two sects emerged from this sect: the Skoptsy (castrationists) and the Dukhobory (literally, fighters for the Holy Spirit). The former, claiming to lead a pure life, removed the testicles of men who had reached a certain age, rendering them incapacitated, while the latter took asceticism in a spiritual direction, rejected the earthly church system, and claimed that heaven was in the heart of each individual. ...
