Xu Ling (English spelling)
[Live] Tiankan 6 (507)
[Death] Shitoku 1 (583)
A Chinese writer and politician of the Liang and Chen dynasties of the Six Dynasties. Born in Donghai, Tan (Shandong Province). His courtesy name was Xiaomu (橆). His posthumous name was Zhang. He showed extraordinary talent from an early age, and is said to have been familiar with Laozi and Zhuangzi at the age of 12. He served King An of Jin (Emperor Jianwen of the Liang dynasty) from the age of 15, and during the Liang dynasty he was active as an emissary to Wei and Northern Qi, and was known for his eloquence and wit. He was also highly valued during the Chen dynasty, and as Deputy Censor-in-Chief he resolved internal disputes within the royal family, and after serving as Right Secretary to the Secretariat and Secretary-in-Chief to the Prince's Junior Tutor, he passed away. As a central figure in the literary circle under Emperor Jianwen, together with his father Xu Chi, Yu Jianwu, and Yu Xin, he composed many elegant and sophisticated poems, which created a trend in the so-called "Gong style" style. By order of Emperor Jianwen, he compiled the "Yutai Xin Ying," a collection of Gong style poems and similar erotic poems from the Han dynasty. He was also a master of elegant and tightly structured tanbu (paired prose), and many of the Chen dynasty's imperial edicts, military books, and summonses were written by him. His style of poetry and prose, along with that of Yu Xin, is called the "Xu Yu style." His surviving works are collected in the "Xu Xiaomu Collection" (6 volumes), with annotations by Wu Zhaoyi of the Qing dynasty.
