The method (balance study) is currently considered to be the most accurate and natural method, in which subjects are asked to eat a test meal prepared to contain a certain amount of fat or protein for a certain period of time, and the amount of undigested fat or ^protein excreted in the feces during that period is measured, and the presence or absence of digestive and absorptive disorders is determined from the excretion rate relative to the amount ingested. Another method that is often used is to have subjects ingest a certain amount of fat ( ^131I -triolein) or protein ( ^131I -albumin) bound to the radioisotope ^131I , and then measure the amount of ^131I in blood collected at regular intervals or the amount of ^131I remaining in the excreted feces using a radiation meter, and calculate the absorption rate or excretion rate relative to the amount of 131I ingested to determine digestive and absorptive capacity. …

...This is a physiological test method, in which the test meal causes the secretion of gastrointestinal hormones, and the stimulation of pancreatic juice secretion is observed. To assess pancreatic function from the state of digestion and absorption, there is a balance study in which the amount of fat and nitrogen in the feces is measured after a certain amount of food is ingested, but this is not often performed because it is troublesome and the results obtained do not accurately reflect pancreatic exocrine function. As a general test, undigested food residues in the feces are observed under a microscope to estimate pancreatic exocrine function.
