The first branch of the trigeminal nerve. It controls sensations of the contents of the orbit and the skin around it. It emerges from the trigeminal ganglion, runs forward along the lateral side of the cavernous sinus, gives off tentorial branches that innervate the tentorium cerebelli, then enters the orbit through the superior orbital fissure and branches into the lacrimal nerve, frontal nerve, and nasociliary nerve.
