1685‐1740 Holy Roman Emperor. Reigned 1711-40. During the War of the Spanish Succession, he competed with Philip of Bourbon for the throne, but when he was chosen as emperor, he gave up the Spanish throne and received the Southern Netherlands and Naples in the Treaty of Utrecht. He issued a Pragmatiste Sanctification (Pragmatiste Sanctification) to allow his eldest daughter Maria Theresa to inherit Austria, and received the recognition of the great powers. However, his national strength was depleted in the war against the Ottoman Turks, and he was defeated in the War of the Polish Succession, and he ceded the new territory of the Kingdom of Naples to the Bourbons.
