Son of Philip of Habsburg, he succeeded his maternal grandfather Ferdinand V as King of Spain as Charles I (reigned 1516-1556). After the death of his grandfather Maximilian I, he became Holy Roman Emperor as Charles V (reigned 1519-1556). With vast Habsburg territories, he fought against France and the Ottoman Empire over control of Italy (Italian Wars). He was troubled by the Protestant Reformation movement in Germany, and at the Diet of Worms in 1521, he persecuted Luther, but due to the invasion of the Ottoman Empire and other factors, he needed to gain the cooperation of Protestant princes, so he was forced to permit the spread of Lutheranism in 1526, but banned it again in 1529, which caused rebellions from the Protestant princes. Although he won the war against the Schmalkaldic League (1546-1547), he officially recognized Lutheranism at the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, and abdicated in disappointment in 1556. → Related topics Duke of Alba | Cabezón | Clement VII | Comuneros Revolt | Protestant Reformation | Diet of Speyer | Holy Roman Empire | Philip II | Ferdinand I | Butzer | Francis I | Magellan | Medici | Morales | Moritz Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
