A port city in western Kenya, east Africa. The capital of Nyanza Province. It faces Nyanza Bay on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. With a population of 268,300 (2002 estimate), it is Kenya's third largest city. A railway line was established in 1901 from Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast. Today, it is a key location for land and water transport on Lake Victoria, distributing agricultural products such as cotton, coffee, corn, groundnuts, and sesame. There are also factories for shipbuilding, fish processing, leather processing, flour milling, and lumber.
