America's largest food retailer. With over 1,000 stores in the US and Canada. Headquartered in Oakland, California. Founded in 1915 by Marion Burton Skaggs in American Falls, Idaho. Growing as a grocery chain through a series of acquisitions, it expanded into non-food areas in 1963, and in 1973 overtook A & P to become America's largest supermarket. Approximately 90% of its stores in the US are located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It is also actively expanding overseas, mainly into Canada.
