This refers to death caused by fire or heat, either instantly at the scene or within a short time after. The majority of burned bodies are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning that occurs at the scene, so when the blood of the deceased is examined, a large amount of carboxyhemoglobin is detected. Furthermore, if there is inhalation of soot, erythematous or blistered burns, or burns in the throat, the body can be considered to be burned. In some crimes, after murder, a house is set on fire to disguise the death by burning as a result of negligence, but by checking the above points, this can be distinguished from a death by burning.

火災や火熱が原因となって，現場で即死するか，あるいはその後短時間で死亡するものをいう。焼死体の大多数は，現場に発生した一酸化炭素に中毒して死亡するので，死体血液を調べると，多量の一酸化炭素ヘモグロビンが検出される。さらに，すすの吸入，紅斑性および水疱性火傷，咽喉部の火傷などがあれば，焼死体と考えてよい。犯罪のなかには，殺害後，家に放火し，過失による焼死を偽装することがあるが，上記の点を確認することで焼死と区別できる。
