Born April 11, 1893 in Middletown, Connecticut
Died October 12, 1971, Sunday Springs, Maryland. American politician. Graduated from Harvard Law School in 1918. Under Secretary of the Treasury in 1933, Assistant Secretary of State in 1941, Under Secretary of State from 1945 to 1947, and Secretary of State from 1949 to 1953. He was a major planner of foreign policy in the administration of H. Truman. Acheson placed emphasis on the economic recovery and security of Western Europe, and promoted the North Atlantic Treaty, while adopting a policy of liquidating aid to the Nationalist government of China. In January 1950, he spoke of America's defense line in the Pacific as a line connecting the Aleutians, Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines, but this did not include South Korea, and was criticized by Republican politicians after the outbreak of the Korean War. He was the chief plenipotentiary of the United States at the time of the Treaty of Peace with Japan in 1951. After retiring from the position of Secretary of State, he returned to the legal profession, but was active as a foreign policy advisor to successive presidents. In 1970, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her memoir, "Present at the Creation," about her time as Secretary of State.
