Maritime Traffic Safety Act

This law, Act No. 115 of 1972, aims to ensure safety by prescribing special traffic methods in the three sea areas of Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay, and the Seto Inland Sea, which are congested with vessel traffic and have many narrow bodies of water, and by implementing regulations to prevent dangers to vessel traffic. It prescribes 11 sea routes in the three sea areas, and stipulates general and special navigation methods for the routes, special rules for large ships, etc., lighting, etc., regulations on construction and work that pose a traffic hazard, and measures to be taken in the event of a marine accident.

船舶交通が輻輳(ふくそう)し、狭い水域が多い東京湾、伊勢(いせ)湾および瀬戸内海の3海域における特別の交通方法を定め、船舶交通の危険を防止する規制を行うことにより、その安全を図ることを目的とする法律。昭和47年法律第115号。3海域には11の航路を定め、航路における一般航法と特別な航法、巨大船等の特則、燈火等、交通に危険な工事・作業の規制および海難発生時の措置などを規定している。
