Adam Clisi

…By 29 BC it had become part of the Roman Empire, initially incorporated into the province of Moesia, but during the Roman period it was known more as Scythia Minor. The Roman Emperor Trajan built a wall here, and a monument to Adam Clisi was erected in his honor, but the region continued to serve as a defense against the influx of peoples from the steppes of southern Russia and Central Asia during the Byzantine period. Peoples who passed through here included the Avars, Slavs, Bulgars, Pechenegs, and Cumans, and at one time the region was also occupied by independent Turkish Bulgar and Cuman states (the name Dobroja is said to derive from the name of a Cuman dynasty called Dobrotići). …
