Achiki

Japanese:
Achiki
An ancient immigrant. An ancestor of the Achikinofuhito (→History). In the Kojiki, he is called Achikishi. According to the Nihon Shoki, in the 15th year of Emperor Ojin's reign, he came to Japan as an envoy from the Baekje king (→Baekje), presented two good horses, and raised them at the Karusakakami stables in Yamato. He also read the Buddhist scriptures well, became the teacher of Prince Uji no Wakaroko, and recommended his fellow countryman Wangin in response to the Emperor's inquiry and had him come to Japan. Although the historical accuracy of the above cannot be confirmed, it is speculated that the presentation of good horses was a return gift for the first large-scale Korean expedition by the Imperial Court in response to Baekje's request around the 56th year of Emperor Nintoku's reign. According to the Kojiki, the Baekje king presented Achikishi with one stallion and one mare, ten volumes of the Analects of Confucius, and one volume of the Thousand Character Classic. Since Yoshishi is a kind of honorific title and Achi can be considered an abbreviation of Achi no Naoki, there is a theory that Achi no Naoki and Achi no Omi are the same person, in which case it is thought that the Nihon Shoki is a split-up account of the story of the same person. Also, the Anchomuraji clan that appears in the Shinsen Shojiroku is thought to be the Achi no Omi clan, whose ancestor was Achi no Naoki, and is said to have been a clan whose occupation was record keeping. It is unclear whether Achi no Naoki, Ojin, and Achi no Omi actually existed. There is also a theory that this name is a direct copy of the clan name of the Achi no Naoki clan.
