...Following Palmer's original newspaper space agency, George P. Rowell started an advertising agency in 1965, which specialized in acting as a space broker on behalf of newspapers, purchasing large amounts of space in advance from them and then selling it to advertisers. In addition to buying and selling space, N.W. Ayer & Son, which opened in Philadelphia in 1969, began producing advertisements, conducting market research, and running advertising campaigns. In 1993, the Newspaper Association of America declared its approval of fees for advertising agencies, which established a contract system for fees and laid the foundation for modernization. Since the 1950s, after World War II, advertising has become more scientific and diversified in order to meet the diverse needs of advertisers. Major agencies such as J. Walter Thompson, Young & Rubicam, and McCann Erickson have expanded the scope of their advertising work and diversified their operations into PR and sales promotion, moving on the path to becoming marketing agencies while also seeking international markets.
