Beauvais - Beauvais (English spelling)

The capital of the Oise department in northern France. Population 55,392 (1999). Located 76 km north-northwest of Paris, facing the Terran River. It was damaged in 1940 during World War II but was rebuilt. It is close to Paris, a key location on the road and rail network, has an airport, and is highly industrialized (auto parts, agricultural machinery, chemicals, etc.). It is an ancient city dating back to the time of the Roman province of Gaul, and had many medieval buildings, but they were lost in war damage. The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, whose construction began in 1247, remains and is famous as one of the largest Gothic cathedrals if it had been completed. Tapestry has been popular since the 17th century, and there is a national museum of tapestry.

フランス北部、オアーズ県の県都。人口5万5392（1999）。パリの北北西76キロメートルにあり、テラン川に臨む。第二次世界大戦中の1940年に戦災を受けたが復興した。パリに近接し、道路・鉄道網の要衝であり、飛行場もあり、工業化（自動車部品、農機具、化学など）が進んでいる。ローマ属州ガリアの時代からある古都で、多くの中世建築物があったが戦災で失われた。1247年建築開始のサン・ピエール寺院が残っており、完成していればゴシック寺院としては最大級のものとして有名。17世紀以来の綴織(つづれおり)が盛んで、綴織の国立美術館がある。
