Butte - Butte (English spelling)

A mining town in southwest Montana, USA. It is located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 1,760 meters. Population: 34,606 (2000). It is a mining town surrounded by many high-quality mineral deposits, and is active in the mining and smelting of copper, the main mineral, as well as zinc, silver, gold, lead, and manganese. The town was founded in 1864 following the discovery of gold veins, and became a city in 1879. Copper mining began in the 1880s, and the Anaconda Copper Company was established, but mining volumes have been declining since 1940. The city is home to the Montana Institute of Mineral Science and Technology and the Mining Museum.

アメリカ合衆国、モンタナ州南西部の鉱山都市。標高1760メートルのロッキー山脈西斜面に位置する。人口3万4606（2000）。周囲に多くの良質の鉱床を有する鉱業の町で、中心となる銅のほか亜鉛、銀、金、鉛、マンガンなどの採掘・製錬が盛んである。1864年、金鉱脈の発見によって町が建設され、79年より市制が施行された。1880年代に銅の採掘が始まり、アナコンダ製銅会社も設立されたが、1940年以来採掘量が減少している。市域にはモンタナ鉱石科学技術大学があり、鉱業博物館の所在地でもある。
