A mining town in southwest Montana, USA. It is located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 1,760 meters. Population: 34,606 (2000). It is a mining town surrounded by many high-quality mineral deposits, and is active in the mining and smelting of copper, the main mineral, as well as zinc, silver, gold, lead, and manganese. The town was founded in 1864 following the discovery of gold veins, and became a city in 1879. Copper mining began in the 1880s, and the Anaconda Copper Company was established, but mining volumes have been declining since 1940. The city is home to the Montana Institute of Mineral Science and Technology and the Mining Museum.
