Born: March 5, 1879, Rangpur
[Died] March 16, 1963. Oxford. British jurist and economist born in India. After graduating from Oxford University, he became a lawyer, but in 1903 he became deputy director of Toynbee Hall, where he studied social and unemployment problems, and also wrote editorials for the Morning Post. In 1908 he joined the Board of Trade, where he worked hard to implement national insurance and to improve the systems required for it. From 1919 he served as president of the London School of Economics for 18 years, and was involved in various government committees. In 1937 he was elected provost of University College, Oxford, and in 1942 he compiled the so-called "Beveridge Report" as chairman of the committee on the general adjustment of social insurance. His major works include Unemployment: A Problem of Industry (1909) and Full Employment in a Free Society (44).

[Died] April 27, 1927. Indianapolis, Indiana. American politician and historian. U.S. Senator from Illinois from 1899 to 1911. Founded the Progressive Party with T. Roosevelt in 1912. Ran for the U.S. Senate in 1914 and 1922 but lost. Also an accomplished historian, his major work was The Life of John Marshall (1916-19).

インド生れのイギリスの法律学者，経済学者。オックスフォード大学卒業後弁護士となったが，1903年トインビー・ホールの副館長に就任して社会問題，失業問題の研究にたずさわるかたわら，『モーニング・ポスト』紙の論説を担当。 08年商務院に入り，国営保険の施行とそのための諸機構整備に尽力。 19年から 18年間ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクスの学長をつとめるとともに，政府の各種委員会に関係。 37年オックスフォード大学のユニバーシティ・カレッジ学寮長に選ばれ，42年社会保険の総合調整に関する委員会設置に伴い，その委員長としていわゆる「ベバリッジ報告」をとりまとめた。主著『失業問題』 Unemployment: A Problem of Industry (1909) ，『自由社会における完全雇用』 Full Employment in a Free Society (44) 。
