A carnivorous mammal of the Mustelidae family (illustration) that resembles a bear with its thick, muscular limbs and wide hands and feet. Its body hair is long and dense, and generally black-brown, but there is a light brown band on the side of its body from the forehead to the base of the tail, and it has a white spot on its chest that resembles a moon ring. It is 65-87 cm long, 17-26 cm long, and weighs 11-32 kg. It is found mainly in the northern coniferous forests of Europe, Asia, and North America. It is solitary except during the breeding season, and wanders around a vast home range of up to 2,000 km2, hunting musk deer, hares, mice, and ptarmigan, and eating fruit.
