It is located 240 km east of Sofia, and was the capital of Bulgaria until the capital was moved to Sofia. It is an agriculturally-based city in a fertile area with 41% black soil, and the food industry (about 60% of the city's industrial production) is thriving, including meat processing, sugar refining, canning, honey, butter, milk processing, and wine production. Industrial production began in 1861 when a textile factory was built by an Italian, and now there are various industries such as machine manufacturing for agricultural and construction machinery, metal processing, wood processing, papermaking, chemicals, synthetic rubber, and textiles. ...
