…They are often paleosols formed during the warm periods of the Tertiary or Pleistocene. They are widespread in the karst regions of the Mediterranean climate, forming a very poor vegetation landscape consisting of dwarf shrubs called garigues, and are used for cultivating grapes and olives, or for grazing sheep and goats. From France

...rain begins in autumn when this high pressure weakens and a low pressure system moves into the valley between the Siberian high pressure system. When it rains, it is heavy, digs a channel, and becomes a torrent that washes away the topsoil. As a result, forests do not grow, and instead there are sparse forests of low shrubs that can withstand the summer dryness, such as plant communities called maquis and thickets of shrubs called garigues, and most cultivated land is irrigated. Winters are generally warm, but when a low pressure system coming from the west develops over the Mediterranean, cold north winds blow from the inland high pressure system into the Rhône Valley.
