A general term for rabbits that are kept as livestock and belong to the order Lagomorpha and family Leporidae of the class Mammalia. They are also called house rabbits or cat rabbits, and are the opposite of wild rabbits. Currently, domestic rabbits kept around the world are domesticated European rabbits that live in central and southern Europe and northern Africa. Since the Middle Ages, they have spread around the world and been improved in each country. Breeds for different purposes include the Angora for fur, the Belgian hare and Flemish Giant for meat, the Chinchilla and Rex for fur, the New Zealand White and Japanese White for meat and fur, and the Himalayan and Dutch for pets.
