Cremona (English spelling)

Japanese: クレモナ(英語表記)Cremona
Cremona (English spelling)
The capital of the province of Cremona in Lombardy, northern Italy. It is located on the north bank of the middle Po River, about 75 km southeast of Milan. It was founded by the Romans around 219 BC on the site of a Celtic village. During the Great Migration Period, the city was often plundered by the Goths and Huns, and its ownership changed frequently even after the Middle Ages. It is located on a fertile plain, and commerce and industry have developed with the surrounding agricultural and livestock areas as its hinterland. There are markets for agricultural and livestock products, and factories for food processing, agricultural machinery, textiles, bricks, pianos, etc. Nougat (a confectionery) has been a specialty product for many years. The violins made by the master craftsmen of the Cremonese school (N. Amati, A. Guarneri, A. Stradivari, etc.) from the 16th to 18th centuries made Cremona famous worldwide. There are many old buildings dating back to the Middle Ages, including a tall bell tower (112m) from the end of the 13th century, a cathedral (1332), a Gothic town hall, and an octagonal baptistery. The population is 73,404 (estimated 1991).
