Born: December 7, 1866, Nagano [Died] June 14, 1949. A ronin from Nagano. He dropped out of the Chinese language department at the Foreign Language School. He served as an army interpreter during the First Sino-Japanese War, and after the war he worked as a Taiwanese government official and a Chinese language instructor at the Military Academy. Guided by his fellow countryman Fukushima Yasumasa, he served again as an army interpreter during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, and entered Beijing. He later presided over the Beijing Police Academy, expanding his influence in Beijing's political circles, and is said to have sworn brothers with Prince Su, a powerful figure in the Qing dynasty. He was a central figure in the Manchurian and Mongolian independence movement. A critical biography is available in Aida Tsutomu's "Kawashima Naniwa-o."
