In Shinto, it is said that one can hear the voice of the gods and receive their protection by pulling the hanging string in front of the worship hall to ring the sacred bell, or by pulling the rope of a float, and this serves to connect people with gods. The Onbashira Hikizuna at Suwa Taisha Shrine, the Kaigenru at Todaiji Temple (an event in which each monk holds a string tied to a brush), and the Keduna at Enryakuji Temple and Higashi Honganji Temple are all strings based on the same idea. In the world of Buddhism, it is said that in order to save humans from this world (the secular world) to the world of Buddha (the pure world), one must grab the rope that is lowered from the pure world, and according to the Eiga Monogatari, Fujiwara no Michinaga was holding a five-colored thread that was threaded through the hands of Amida Buddha when he was on his deathbed. …
