A type of hair ornament. In the Asuka and Nara periods, noblewomen in formal attire would wear a hokei topknot decorated with metal or jeweled hairpins, and there are still some that have been preserved from the Horyuji Temple. After the second half of the 9th century during the Heian period, women began to wear their hair hanging down, and no development of hair ornaments was seen. In the mid-Edo period and into the 17th century, various topknots appeared, and as the front hair, sideburns, and topknots changed, silver plum branches, family crests, and hairpins with earpicks appeared. At first, they were very simple, but they developed into swaying "frilled hairpins" decorated with animals and other motifs. Materials used included silver, gold, tortoiseshell, glass, and copper, and from the Showa period onwards, platinum, rubber, celluloid, and plastic were used.
