The magnetopause is not a simple surface, but has a layered structure that varies depending on the location. The area between 9:00 and 15:00 on the daytime side, centered around noon, that is connected by magnetic field lines passing through the vicinity of geomagnetic latitude 76° to 80° is called the cusp, and is an area where the magnetic field is weak and magnetosheath plasma can directly penetrate into the magnetosphere. This cusp is the boundary between the magnetic field lines that open toward the tail on the nighttime side and those that close at low latitudes (Figure 3).
