A port city on the Arabian Sea on the Malabar Coast of Kerala in southern India. The local name is Kozhikode. It exports spices, teak wood, and rubber. It has long flourished as a port for Arab merchants trading in the Indian Ocean. It was the place where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. It became a British colony in 1792. It prospered until the 19th century by exporting spices, cotton products, and other products to Europe. Calicut is the origin of the word calico (white cotton fabric).
