In 1899, he visited the Dutch East Indies and wrote Silent Power (1900), a work on magical phenomena in local society. In his later years, he came to Japan and wrote a collection of Japanese stories, The Thread of Mercy (1924). He also contributed travel writings and essays to the Hague daily newspaper The Fatherland and other newspapers and magazines, and was active as a journalist. …
