Mordant - Mordant

A chemical used in the mordant method to fix dyes to fibers. Mordants include metal salts such as aluminum, chromium, iron, tin, and copper, as well as tannic acid.

In dip dyeing, the mordant is absorbed into the fiber from a water solution. In textile printing, it is either mixed into the printing paste and printed, or, as in dip dyeing, it is absorbed into the fiber, and then the mordant is partially removed with a printing paste before dyeing.

媒染法において、染料を繊維に定着させるために用いられる薬剤。媒染剤としては、アルミニウム、クロム、鉄、スズ、銅などの金属塩類やタンニン酸などがある。

　媒染剤は浸染では水溶液から繊維に吸収させて用いる。捺染(なっせん)では捺染糊(のり)に混合して印捺するか、浸染と同様に繊維に吸収させたのち、捺染糊で部分的に媒染剤を除去してから染色する方法がある。
