Philosopher. Born in Tokyo as the fourth son of Ryuichi Kuki (1852-1931), a Meiji-era bureaucrat. After graduating from the First Higher School, he entered the Department of Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University in 1909 (Meiji 42), and after graduate school, he went to Europe to study in 1921 (Taisho 10). From then until 1929 (Showa 4), he witnessed the birth of new philosophical thought, including that of Husserl and Heidegger. After returning to Japan, he was invited to Kyoto Imperial University, where he held the position until his death. Kuki's achievements can be broadly divided into three categories: (1) research into Western philosophy, as represented by Manuscripts on the History of Modern Western Philosophy, volumes 1 and 2 (1944, 1948, published posthumously), (2) research into chance, as represented by The Problem of Chance (1935), and (3) research into Japanese culture, as represented by The Structure of 'Iki' (1930). These three are not independent of each other, but are deeply interrelated. In other words, Kuki, who recognized the motif of an isolated subject in the foundations of Western philosophy, aimed to create a new philosophy based on the encounter between subjects and the fundamental contingency that is revealed in that encounter. He believed that such contingency had realized rich expressions in the traditions of Japanese culture.
