...Later it became part of Ibaraki County, and is now the central part of Oarai Town, Higashiibaraki County. During the Edo Period, it was the leading fishing town within the Mito Domain, and from early on it was known for its sardine fishing using large net reeling, but it was also known for its dried bonito flakes, known as "Isonohama-bushi." As there were many fishing boats coming and going, in 1688 (Genroku 1) during the reign of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the feudal lord, a brothel, commonly called a laundry house, was officially licensed in Iwai-machi at the mouth of the Naka River, and it became bustling.
