Stamp Act

This law was enacted in England under Queen Anne in 1712 as an effective alternative to censorship-based censorship and as a way to increase revenue for the treasury. It passed the House of Commons on May 16, passed the Senate unrevised on May 22, and took effect on August 1. The tax was applied to newspapers, pamphlets, paper, etc., making it a typical example of a method of controlling the media from an economic perspective. In the wake of the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century, radical newspapers and weeklies aimed mainly at the lower classes of society began to proliferate, and this law was used as a perfect barrier to stop their spread.

1712年，アン女王治下のイギリスで事前検閲による言論統制にかわる有効な手段，あわせて国庫収入増にもなる方策として制定された法律。下院通過5月16日，無修正で5月22日上院通過，8月1日施行された。課税の対象は新聞紙，パンフレット，紙などで，経済的側面からメディアを統制する方式の典型であった。18世紀末フランス革命の衝撃を受けて，主として社会下層の読者を対象にした急進的新聞，週刊誌が群生すると，この法律は，その普及拡大をくいとめる格好の防波堤として活用された。
