Patriarch of Constantinople. Reigned 1572-79, 1580-84, 1586-95. During the period when the aftermath of the Protestant Reformation spread to the East, he was a powerful leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church under Ottoman rule, and rejected the Catholic invitation to unite and the Lutheran approach. He is known for his criticism of the Augsburg Confession in his correspondence with Lutheran theologians over doctrine. He traveled to Russia and approved the elevation of the Metropolitan of Moscow to Patriarchate in 1589.

コンスタンティノープル総主教。在位1572‐79,1580‐84,1586‐95年。宗教改革の余波が東方に及んだ時期にあって，オスマン帝国支配下の東方正教会の有力な指導者として，カトリック側の合同のさそいとルター派の働きかけを拒否した。とくに教義をめぐるルター派神学者との書簡のやりとりで，〈アウクスブルク信仰告白〉を批判したことで知られる。ロシアに旅行し，1589年モスクワ府主教の総主教格上げを承認した。
