A unit of area for cultivated land, the area from which one bundle of rice can be harvested. Sometimes it is called sokukari or sokuhakari. It is closely related to shiro (dai) and is thought to have been used in the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions since the pre-Taika period. It was abolished under the Ritsuryo system when the chotanbo system was adopted, but it remained in use as a custom among the general public, and from the Kamakura period onwards the unit of kari appeared on documents for sales and purchases throughout the country, especially in the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions. The size of the land varied depending on the type of soil, and the contents of the bundles differed depending on the region, so the area was not fixed.
