Chen Yuan (English name)

Japanese: 陳垣 - ちんえん（英語表記）Chén Yuán

1880‐1971
A Chinese historian. His pen name is Yuan'an. He was born in Xinhui County, Guangdong Province. He made extensive use of his knowledge of cataloguing, and produced meticulous research achievements in the fields of Yuan history, Western Region history, and religious history. He also had a deep knowledge of the history of Western medicine, and was interested in politics. In academic administration, he served as president of the Catholic Fu Jen University, and after the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as president of Beijing Normal University and director of the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His works include "Considerations on the Hua-Hu Transformation of the People in the Western Regions in the Yuan Dynasty," "Considerations on New Taoist Teaching in Hebei at the Beginning of the Southern Song Dynasty," "Ju Lie of Historical Characters," and "Commentary on the Table of Contents of the Mirror of Hu." 中国の歴史学者。字は援菴。広東省新会県の人。目録学の知識を駆使して，元代史，西域史と宗教史の領域で精緻な研究業績をあげた。西洋医学史にも造詣が深く，政治にも関心をもち，学術行政においても，カトリック系の輔仁大学学長をつとめ，新中国成立後は北京師範大学校長，中国科学院歴史研究所所長を歴任した。《元西域人華化考》《南宋初河北新道教考》《史諱挙例》《通鑑胡注表微》などの著書がある。【礪波護】
