Sandwich

...a dish of meat, vegetables, etc. sandwiched between thin slices of bread. This way of eating has been around for a long time. In France, farmers used to take meat to work with them in black bread, and in some regions, it was customary to give bread with meat in it to people who were traveling. The name sandwich is said to have come from John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-92), an Englishman who was obsessed with cards and didn't have time to sit at the table, so he put cold beef between toasted bread and ate it.
