A perennial herb of the Ranunculaceae family (illustration) that grows along roadsides, on the ridges of fields, on the edges of bamboo groves, and between stone walls. The basal leaves and stems grow in clusters from the top of an oblong tuber. The basal leaves are trifoliate and compound with long petioles. The leaflets are deeply lobed into three, the lobes are further lobed into three shallow lobes, the tips of the lobes are rounded, and the undersides of the leaves are whitish. The base of the petiole spreads out like a sheath and embraces the stem. The stem is 10-30 cm tall, branches at the top, and has sparse soft hairs along with the petioles. The stem leaves are similar to the basal ones, but are smaller, more easily divided, and have short petioles. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
