Kalamata (English spelling)
Also known as Kalámai. A city in the southern part of the Peloponnese Peninsula, Greece. It is the second largest port city in the peninsula after Patrae, and is located at the head of the Messinian Gulf. It flourished as a Byzantine city in the 10th century, but after the occupation of the Fourth Crusade, it was given as a fief to the Frenchman Bilardoun in 1208. From the mid-15th century onwards, it was ruled alternately by Venice and the Ottoman Empire, and became part of Greece during the Greek War of Independence (1821-29). Olives, raisins and other fruits from the Messinian plain were traded, and industries such as silk weaving, flour milling, alcohol production and tobacco were established. It is connected to Patrae and Athens by rail. Population 45,090 (1991 estimate).
