Twenty-Six Martyrs

Japanese: 二十六聖人 - にじゅうろくせいじん
Twenty-Six Martyrs
On December 19, 1597 (February 5, 1597), 26 Christian missionaries and believers were executed in Nagasaki. They were canonized (→ beatified) by Pope Pius IX in 1862. Since the expulsion of the missionaries in 1587 (Tensho 15), many missionaries and believers were arrested, but the incident involving the Spanish ship San Felipe in 1596 (Keicho 1) was the direct trigger, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who suspected invasion by Western European countries, arrested Christians in Kyoto and Osaka. Among them, three missionaries including Pedro Baptista, three ilmans including Francisco de San Miguel, three Japanese ilmans including Miki Paulo, and 17 Japanese believers including Suzuki Paulo were sent to Nagasaki and crucified. This was the first martyrdom in Japan. The Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan Memorial Museum is located in Nishizaka-machi, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture.
