[Traditional Music]
Hawaii shares with other Polynesian islands the fact that music has been combined with literature and dance in traditional culture, but it has an exceptionally wide variety of musical instruments among Polynesians. The basic instruments used to accompany the hula dance include the pahu, a one-sided drum made from a hollowed-out palm log covered with sharkskin, the pūniu, a one-sided drum made from a coconut shell covered with fish skin and tied to the knee, and the ipu, a giant gourd played by pounding it on a mat or striking it with the fingers or palms. The musical instruments that the dancers themselves collect and hold include kala'au, which are made by striking two pieces of hard wood together; ul'ul'i, which are feather-decorated rattles made of small gourds or coconut shells with pebbles or seeds inside; pū'ili, which are bamboo tubes split into thin strips like combs and struck against the body; and 'ili'ili, which are two pairs of flat stones held in both hands and struck together like castanets. Each of these instruments creates a richly varied sound world with its own unique tone.
