1488‐1563 Swiss music theorist and humanist. His real name was Heinrich Loriti. He studied philosophy, theology, mathematics, and music at the University of Cologne, and in 1512 was awarded the title of poet laureate by Emperor Maximilian I. He later taught poetics, theology, and classical literature in Basel, Freiburg, and other cities, while also studying ancient and medieval literature and music theory. He formed a friendship with Erasmus, and in religious matters he firmly maintained a Counter-Reformation stance. His major work, Dodekachordon (1547), was based on the theoretical traditions of the ancient and medieval period, building on the work of Boethius and Gauffrius, and made a major contribution, especially to the theory of church modes.
