Music Award - Ongakusho

Japanese:
Music Award - Ongakusho

This award is given to outstanding individuals and musical groups to promote musical activities such as composition, performance, and research. In addition to a certificate and a medal, prizes in various forms are usually awarded, but in some cases, the recipients are given the opportunity to perform, study abroad, or publish.

Historically, the most famous music award is the Prix de Rome (established in 1803), which is given to up-and-coming French composers. The winner can stay in Rome for four years and devote themselves to composing. Many of France's leading composers, including Berlioz, Bizet, and Debussy, have received this award.

In Japan, the Imperial Prize and Japan Art Academy Prize from the Japan Art Academy, the Art Encouragement Prize from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize and New Face Prize), and the Grand Prize and Excellence Prize for performances or works participating in the "Art Festival" are also given to musical activities. Famous music awards in the narrow sense include the "Otaka Prize" from the NHK Symphony Orchestra (awarded to a piece selected from orchestral works by Japanese composers premiered in the year and performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra), the "ExxonMobil Music Award" (formerly the Mobil Music Award), which covers both Japanese and Western music, and the "Suntory Music Prize" from the Suntory Music Foundation.

A particularly notable trend after World War II was the proliferation of awards for broadcast programs and for records. Well-known record awards include the Grammy Awards in the United States, the Grand Prix de Disque in France, and the Japan Record Award in Japan.
