Santorio - Santorio (English spelling) Santorio Santorio

Italian physician and philosopher. Born on the island of Istria near Trieste. His father was an artillery officer. At the age of 14, he entered the University of Padua, where he studied medicine and natural philosophy for seven years, and then opened a practice at the request of King Maximilian of Padua. He was professor of medicine at the University of Padua from 1611 to 1624, and later became consultant to Venetian physicians. He is known as the founder of modern metabolism, measuring the weight loss caused by insensible evaporation from the skin and lungs. He is also known for introducing two useful instruments into clinical medicine: the thermometer and the clock. Santorio was in contact with the leading scientist of the time, Galileo, and is thought to have learned about these two instruments through him. He also designed a trocar for removing bladder stones and a tracheal cannula for diphtheria patients. His works include Aphorisms (1614).

著書に『警句』Aphorisms(1614)がある。
