Secrets of Annual Events - Nenjuugyoujihishou

Japanese: 年中行事秘抄 - ねんじゅうぎょうじひしょう

This is a book of official affairs that records the annual ceremonies and rituals of the Imperial Court. It quotes and excerpts from ancient books on the significance and origins of the events, as well as precedents and facts, and is notable for the large number of Chinese books among its quotes. Among the references is the era name of Kenkyu (1190-99), and the colophon of the Gunsho Ruiju edition states that it was copied around Einin (1293-99), so it is believed that most of the work was produced before Einin. A distinctive feature of this book is that it does not explain the procedure of the ceremonies itself, but rather clarifies the actual state of the events by relying on precedents in the cited books.

朝廷の年中行事儀式について記した公事の書。行事の意義，起源をはじめ，先例故実を古書より引用，抄録しており，とくに，そのなかに中国の書が多くみられるのが特徴である。引用文献のなかに建久(1190‐99)の年号があり，また《群書類従》本の奥書に永仁(1293‐99)ころ書写したと書かれていて，おおむね永仁以前に作られたと思われる。本書の特徴として，みずから儀式の次第を説明することはあまりせず，引用書の先例によって行事の実態を明らかにしている。
