1499‐1562 Spanish Franciscan and a leading figure in Christian spirituality. His Spanish name was Pedro. Born in Alcántara, he studied law at the University of Salamanca before becoming a Franciscan. After becoming a priest in 1524, he served as abbot and provincial superior, and from 1542 he practiced a strict monastic life himself while devoting his life to reforming the order. His spirit of reform also had a great influence on Teresa of Avila. His book, Prayer and Meditation, is an excellent work of spiritual theology.
