Spanish Franciscan and a leading figure in Christian spirituality. His Spanish name was Pedro. Born in Alcántara, he studied law at the University of Salamanca before becoming a Franciscan. After becoming a priest in 1524, he served as abbot and provincial superior, and from 1542 he practiced a strict monastic life himself while devoting his life to reforming the order. His spirit of reform also had a great influence on Teresa of Avila. His book, Prayer and Meditation, is an excellent work of spiritual theology.

スペインのフランシスコ会士，キリスト教霊性の大家。スペイン名ペドロ。アルカンタラAlcántaraに生まれ，サラマンカ大学で法律を学んだ後，フランシスコ会士になる。1524年司祭になった後，修道院長や管区長の職を歴任し，42年以来みずから厳格な修道生活を実践しながら生涯にわたって会の改革のために尽力した。彼の改革精神はアビラのテレサにも多大な影響を与えている。著作《祈り･黙想論》は霊性神学上のすぐれた作品である。
