Orange (English spelling)
A city just west of Newark, New Jersey, United States. It is located 20 km west of New York City. It was settled in 1678. It was originally named Mountain Plantation, but was later renamed after the Duke of Orange. It has been a center of hat manufacturing since 1785. A railroad was laid in the 1830s. The shoe manufacturing industry was thriving in the city from the Industrial Revolution until after the Civil War. It was a part of the city of Newark for a long time, but was separated in 1806. It forms a suburban residential area with the four municipalities of East Orange, West Orange, South Orange, and Maplewood, which were originally part of the city. There are factories for computers, aircraft parts, and pharmaceuticals, but it is mainly a satellite residential city of both New York and Newark. Population: 29,925 (1990).

A city in southeastern Texas, USA. Located near the mouth of the Sabine River, which forms the border with Louisiana, it has a deep-water port and a canal that connects it to the Gulf of Mexico. Settlement began in 1836. It developed as a forestry and port town, and a steam-powered sawmill was opened as early as the 1940s. It fell into disuse during the Civil War, but began to recover in 1881. During World War I, a shipyard was established and became the city's main industry. After World War II, it became the site of a naval base. Located in a natural gas and oil producing area, the petrochemical, synthetic rubber, and cement industries developed. Population 19,381 (1990).

A city in southern California, USA. It is a satellite city of Los Angeles, located about 50 km northwest. The town's origins date back to 1871, but it developed as Los Angeles expanded. It was named after its location in an orange-growing region, its warm climate even in winter, and its proximity to the sea. Industries include citrus processing, paper packaging, aircraft manufacturing, and electronics manufacturing. Population: 136,416 (2010).

A city in the eastern part of New South Wales, Australia, 266 km west-northwest of Sydney. It has a history as a gold rush town, but is now a center of fruit farming, mixed farming, and sheep farming. In 1972, it was designated as a growth hub city along with Bathurst, 55 km to the east, and is attracting factories, including electrical appliance factories. Population 32,846 (estimated 1991).

アメリカ合衆国,テキサス州南東部の都市。ルイジアナ州との境界をなすサビーヌ川河口付近に位置し,水深の大きな港で,運河によってメキシコ湾に通じている。 1836年に入植開始。林業地および港町として発達し,40年代には早くも蒸気力による製材所が開かれた。南北戦争で一時寂れたが,81年から復興が始った。第1次世界大戦中,造船所が設置され,市の主産業となった。第2次世界大戦後は海軍基地がおかれている。天然ガスと石油の産地にあり,石油化学,合成ゴム,セメント工業が発達。人口1万 9381 (1990) 。
