…The methods of awarding ranks under the Ritsuryo system were divided into Imperial conferment for those with ranks of the fifth or fifth rank or higher, Soju for those with ranks of the eighth or seventh rank or higher, and Kanbanju for those with ranks of the eighth rank and first rank, while Imperial conferment was used for those with orders of honor for the sixth rank or higher, and Soju for those with ranks of the seventh to twelfth ranks. The Imperial conferment ceremony for those with ranks of the fifth rank or higher became one of the annual events of the Imperial Court, and although there were both male and female conferment of ranks, the term conferment generally referred to the male conferment of ranks. In the first half of the eighth century, the conferment of ranks was generally held on New Year's Day, but the date was not fixed. …
